Job Title: Lay Coach (All Sports)
Reports To: Athletic Director / Head Coach (as assigned)
Position Summary:
The Lay Coach supports the school’s athletic program by providing coaching, mentorship, and supervision for student-athletes in a specific sport. This position is open to individuals who are not full-time school employees but have the skills, experience, and passion to positively impact student-athletes. The Lay Coach is responsible for promoting skill development, sportsmanship, teamwork, and adherence to school and district policies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in planning, organizing, and conducting practices and competitions
- Teach sport-specific skills, techniques, and strategies appropriate to the level of play
- Promote good sportsmanship, character, and teamwork among student-athletes
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants during practices and events
- Supervise students at all times during athletic activities, including travel if required
- Support academic expectations and encourage student-athlete success in the classroom
- Assist with equipment management, inventory, and care
- Follow all school, district, and OSSAA rules and regulations
- Maintain effective communication with the Head Coach, Athletic Director, parents, and students
- Attend required meetings, trainings, and professional development sessions
- Serve as a positive role model in behavior, attitude, and appearance
Qualifications:
- Previous coaching or playing experience in the assigned sport preferred
- Knowledge of rules, strategies, and fundamentals of the sport
- Ability to work effectively with students of diverse backgrounds and skill levels
- Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills
- Ability to maintain appropriate boundaries and professional relationships with students
- Must meet all district and state requirements for coaching (background check, certifications, etc.)
Required Certifications:
- First Aid / CPR / AED Certification
- Concussion Awareness Training
- Any other certifications required by the Athletic Department
Working Conditions:
- Requires evening and weekend hours
- Outdoor and indoor work environments depending on sport
- Physical activity including standing, walking, demonstrating skills, and lifting equipment
Compensation:
- Stipend-based position (amount determined by district pay scale and sport assignment)
