PARAPROFESSIONAL - READING

 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:              High School diploma or equivalent, PLUS two years of college coursework (48 units), OR Associate Degree (or higher), OR pass a local assessment of knowledge and skills in assisting in instruction (Parapro, WorkKeys, OGET).

 

REPORTS TO:                        Principal

 

JOB SUMMARY:  The Paraprofessional will work directly with the Reading Interventionist. The Paraprofessional is responsible for providing hands-on support to a Teacher when preparing lessons or teaching students in the classroom. Their duties include helping with behavior management during lessons, tracking a student’s grades and behavior and setting up classroom materials before class.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

Prepare the classroom to promote a healthy and safe learning environment

Ensure classroom safety guidelines are met at all times

Utilize various techniques to be successful with managing students

Engage with children to enhance and encourage learning

Assist the teacher in modifying materials to meet the specific needs of a child

Provide basic caregiving duties, support, and encouragement in all aspects of development

Take necessary precautions to protect students

Monitor the classroom and minimize distractions and disruptions

Assists with public relations projects, displays, bulletin boards, etc.

Assists volunteers in job assignments as needed.

Performs any other duties as directed by the Superintendent or her/his designee.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

 

Serve as a guide in instructing students on proper classroom behavior

Help teachers keep records for grading and attendance

Get materials and equipment ready to help teachers prepare for class

Reinforce lessons by reviewing material one-on-one and in small groups with students

Supervise students during lunch or recess, as well as in between classes or on field trips

Assist students who need additional help learning a specific concept

Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.

Knowledge of current computer software packages and classroom technology tools. 

Proven ability to work effectively and communicate with students and staff.

Service-oriented mindset and an inclination towards creative problem solving.

Individuals should be self-motivated, organized and able to manage multiple, diverse projects at once.

 

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Regular classroom/school environment. Regular office environment, including frequent use of electronic email, being able to sit for long periods of time without a break, etc. Normal effort of occasional periods of moderate physical activity.  Work is typically performed in an office environment with some travel to other campuses. Interruptions are expected to occur often. Must be able to adapt and respond quickly to constantly changing technology.
