QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or Educational Media. Valid Oklahoma Teaching Certificate.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Provide accessible tools for students and staff to direct, enhance, and support the learning process. Knowledge of curricular areas is essential in order to serve the interdisciplinary needs of the learning community. It is the goal of the Media Specialist to work in a flexible environment, collaborating with staff, teaching skills to students and staff, and maintaining the holdings of the Media Center. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Informs students and staff of available technology/media and assists with its integration in the classroom. 
• Is familiar with curriculum content and instructional practices within the building. 
• Assembles collections of media that compliment and support the curriculum. 
• Uses current, recommended selection aids including multicultural/gender-fair criteria in the selection and recommendation of materials.
• Collaborates with and coaches teachers to provide instructional strategies and resources in teaching information and technology literacy skills.
• Solicits input from teachers and students concerning media needs and selects materials for a variety of student/staff interests, learning styles and reading levels. 
• Catalogs, classifies and organizes media according to accepted standards and ready accessibility. 
• Supervises, coordinates, and trains media center paraeducators, student helpers and volunteers. 
• Arranges for the inspection, maintenance, replacement, and repair of media under the realm of the responsibility assigned by the District. 
• Eliminates out-dated, inappropriate and unsuitable materials. 
• Promotes and models legal, ethical and efficient information seeking behaviors. 
• Assists staff to ensure technology is utilized to the fullest extent possible through meaningful integration into the District adopted curriculum. 
• Maintains an accurate and current inventory of media materials and equipment, and submits reports in a timely manner.

• Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis and the formulation of action plans.
• Ability to organize, catalog, display, distribute and produce instructional materials. 
• Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and organize and coordinate work.
• Knowledge and ability to teach information and technology literacy needed for independent learning. 
• Ability to provide an environment conducive to quick accessibility and development of proficient media users. 
• Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
• Ability to select and provide access to a wide variety of materials which meet the needs of various learning situations. 
• Knowledge of civil rights relating to free access to materials and copyright laws. 
• Ability to demonstrate effective interpersonal relationships with students, staff, and parents. 
• Service-oriented mindset and an inclination towards creative problem solving.
• Individuals should be self-motivated, organized and able to manage multiple, diverse projects at once.

 

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: 

Regular classroom/school environment. Regular office environment, including frequent use of electronic email, being able to sit for long periods of time without a break, etc. Normal effort of occasional periods of moderate physical activity. Work is typically performed in an office environment with some travel to other campuses. Interruptions are expected to occur often. Must be able to adapt and respond quickly to constantly changing technology.
